Mid Durham Rural West Area Action Partnership

Following the launch of the AAP in May the first Board meeting of the Partnership was held on 22nd July in the Sir Bobby Robson Centre, Ushaw Moor. The Board is made up of 7 Elected Members: Councillors Joe Armstrong, Ossie Johnson, Ronnie Rodgers, Paul Taylor, John Wilkinson, Bob Young and Colin Burton (Parish representative), 7 Partner organisation members:Dave Coxon, Police; Keith Tallentire, Housing; Steve Chicken, Fire; Louise Unsworth, PCT; Julie Taylor, Voluntary sector; Martin Bell from the Business Sector and 7 public representatives: Anne Bonner, John Booth, Barbara Armstrong, Kathleen Currie, Keith James, Alison Hiles and Mary Tribe.

The initial task for the Board was to review the 10 priorities which were identified at the launch event in May i.e. road safety and highways, support for the community and voluntary sector, activities for young people, support for older people, community safety and crime, clean and green environment, public transport, improved health and well-being, local economy and affordable decent housing. The Board decided to target the top three priorities namely road safety and highways, support for the community and voluntary sector and activities for young people. This would ensure the AAP could concentrate its efforts and deliver on the ‘action’ element of the AAP’s role. Lead members and working groups for each priority were formed and will be supported by the AAP Co-ordinator, Andy Coulthard and his team. It is envisaged that Action Plans will be presented to the next Board meeting in September. Andy says ‘The task groups are keen to work with any organisation, service and non profit making business to work up ideas, share resources and collectively make these ideas come to life’. Anyone who would like to raise an issue for the Mid Durham Rural West AAP to consider can contact Andy on 01388 816166 ext 7760 or email andy.coulthard@durham.gov.uk.

Durham County Council-Chairman’s Charity Appeal

Councillor Brian Myers, Chairman of Durham County Council, has chosen ‘The Chyrelle Addams Breast Cancer Trust’ as his charity for the year. The Trust was set up by Patricia Greensmith, a local Willington girl and artiste who performs under the name of Chryelle Addams, who was diagnosed with breast cancer. Patricia wanted to raise money for equipment for local hospitals to detect and treat breast cancer. Following an approach from Cllr Myers the Parish Council agreed to donate £450 to such a worthy cause and the Chairman of the Council, Cllr. David Bell and his wife Anne, presented the cheque to Cllr.Myers and his wife Alice on the evening of the judging of the painting competition at New Brancepeth Village Hall.
